M&Ms were previously known in the Netherlands as Treets (with peanuts) and Bonitos (without peanuts). These sweets were distributed to US soldiers for introduction as early as World War II. Back then, the sweets were 'just'  brown and it was not until the 1960s that the chocolate sweets were coloured red, yellow and green. Still later, the cheerful colours blue and orange were added.

In the 1980s, the names of Treets and Bonitos were renamed M&Ms Choco and M&Ms Peanut. This abbreviation stands for Mars & Murrie's, the proud inventors of the brightly coloured choco candies. In doing so, each sweet is printed with an 'm' just like a real hallmark.

The two varieties M&Ms Choco and M&Ms Peanut are the most well-known choco candies. All sweets are filled with chocolate and finished with a crunchy, coloured outer layer.
